That is why the signs of rotten rafter feet are worth taking seriously, particularly on homes with ageing timber fascias, recurring gutter leaks or water staining around the eaves. Left alone, a small wet patch at the roof edge can turn into a larger roofline repair and spoil a fresh fascia installation before it has had a fair chance.
Rafter feet are the exposed ends of the roof rafters, where they project over the external wall to form the eaves. They support the fascia board and help carry the guttering at the roof edge. When water repeatedly reaches this area, the timber can soften and decay. The damage is often hidden by fascia boards, soffits or old paint, so the true condition may not be clear until roofline materials are removed.
What rotten rafter feet look like
